DANGEROUS DISTORTIONS: COMPARING HOW AFRICAN AMERICANS, LATINOS AND ASIANS ARE MISREPRESENTED IN THE MEDIA

Facilitator: Marisela Martinez, director of Intercultural Affairs, Agnes Scott College

Sambo, Mamie, Frito Bandito, Fiery Latinas, Dragon Lady and the Eternal Foreigner....all of these names illicit stereotypes for African Americans, Latinos and Asians. Where did they come from? How were they created? Why were they created? What do they have in common? The audience will find answers after watching clips from "Ethnic Notions," "The Bronze Screen" and "The Slanted Screen." We will discuss, compare and contrast and ask the ultimate question: "How much has Hollywood changed?"
