The Friends of the National Archives Southeast in conjunction with APA community partners and archival institutions in the South are sponsoring a symposium celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.  The event will be held at the National Archives at Atlanta.

Symposium events include speeches by:

· U. S. Representative Anh Joseph Cao from Louisiana.  Congressman Cao was born in Saigon and is the first Vietnamese-American elected to the United States Congress.

· U. S. Representative Mike Honda from California, whose life story is an example of how immigrants and long-term residents struggled to assimilate as well as overcome social inequalities and injustices.  Born in California, Representative Honda spent his early childhood with his family in an internment camp in Colorado during World War II.

· John Jung, author of Southern Fried Rice: Growing Up in a Chinese Laundry in the Deep South and several other books on Chinese Americans.  Jung was born into the only Chinese family in Macon, Georgia.  His family lived above their laundry between 1928 and 1952.

· Bill Greene, Archivist at the National Archives at San Francisco, will share with the audience information on the rich collection of documents in their holdings that relate to the Asian Pacific American experience.

In addition, the symposium will feature workshops on preserving family and community histories, presentation of awards to the winners of the essay contest, and a display of documents from the holdings of the National Archives that document the history and experiences of Asian-Americans in the United States.  For details on the event, click the "Read More" button.
